Posture-related pain is on the rise. With so many employees working from home, many do not have the right tools to keep their posture in check. Slouching, looking down, and an unoptimized work station all contribute to back and neck pain.

While back pain is treatable by our chiropractors at ChiroConcepts of Frisco North, there are several things you can do to improve your posture while working at your computer.

The 5 Point Posture Checklist

Throughout the day, make sure you are practicing these 5 key components of healthy posture while working at your computer:

  1. Support Your Arms: Many people don’t think about their arm placement when they are sitting at a desk, but it is crucial for maintaining good posture. In ideal circumstances, your arms should lie flat, with your elbows bent at a 90 degree angle.
  2. Keep Knees at a 90 Degree Angle: This step reduces the amount of stress and pressure on your feet. By keeping your knees at a 90 degree angle, you encourage proper blood circulation. This prevents areas of your body from falling asleep, as well as ensuring that oxygen gets to critical muscle tissue.
  3. Keep Your Feet Flat: Keeping your feet flat is critical to keeping your knees at a 90 degree angle. Feet flat on the floor will keep your spine in a more natural alignment, with equal weight distribution on both sides of your body.
  4. Relax Your Shoulders: The shoulders carry a lot of our tension. Ensuring they are relaxed will prevent muscle stiffness, as well as prevent the spine from curving unnaturally while you work. Relaxed shoulders can also prevent tension headaches.
  5. Support Your Back: It can be hard to properly support your back, as most workplaces simply don’t have the right chairs. A good chair should support your back, not cause pain. Finding the right chair can be difficult, as it will depend on your height, weight, and body type.

In addition to the above, we strongly encourage you to make the switch to a sit-stand desk, or even a standing desk. Said desks keep you moving enough to protect your health. Lack of movement throughout the day is one of the largest contributors of disease in modern society. Our chiropractors can discuss office furniture with you that’ll better your health and make it easier to sustain good posture.
