Preparing for a Lower Back Adjustment

Our chiropractor may recommend a lower back adjustment if you are suffering from chronic or recurring lower back pain, stiffness, and loss of flexibility or mobility. Lower back adjustments are a safe, effective alternative to prescription drugs, surgery, and other pain management techniques. If you’re scheduled for a lower back adjustment in Frisco and want to know what to expect, these tips can help you prepare:

Why Do I Need a Lower Back Adjustment?

Lower back adjustments can treat chronic low back pain caused by:

  • A sports, work, or auto injury
  • Sciatica
  • Age-related disc degeneration
  • Disc herniation
  • Bone spurs
  • Stress

Do I Need to Prepare Ahead of Time?

You don’t need to do anything specific ahead of time to prepare for a lower back adjustment. Our chiropractor will walk you through the treatment process and explain to you the benefits of a lower back adjustment for your condition and symptoms. He might suggest that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment, or that you not take certain medication on the day of your appointment.

What Should I Expect During My Adjustment?

When you visit our chiropractor for a lower back adjustment, you will lie on a treatment table, either fully clothed, or in a medical gown. Our chiropractor will then gently manipulate your tendons, muscles, spine, and joints. He may also move your body into different positions and hold them there in order to stretch your limbs and muscles and encourage joint release. You should try to relax your muscles during the treatment.

Are There Side Effects After Treatment?

Most people don’t experience any side effects after a lower back adjustment; however, a small percentage of patients experience mild, temporary side effects like soreness, tenderness, or stiffness. You can treat these symptoms with over-the-counter NSAIDs or rest and ice, and they should resolve in four to six hours.
