How to Check Your Child’s Posture

Infants and children can suffer from similar aches and pains as adults, and some of these issues can be related to their posture. Poor posture can also be an early warning sign of a childhood condition of the spine, like scoliosis. If your child is school-aged and carries a backpack to school every day, be sure to check their posture to make sure they aren’t putting themselves at risk of back and neck pain. Here is a quick, five-step assessment you can do at home to check your child’s posture:

Head

Make sure your child doesn’t have any tilt or rotation to the head. Look at the bottom of your child’s earlobes and ensure they are of equal height with no tilt. You should be able to see the same amount of ear on both sides of your child’s head from the back, confirming that there is no rotation to the head or neck.

Shoulders

To look for even shoulders, draw a straight line from the top of one shoulder to the other. The line should be parallel to the floor to indicate your child’s shoulders are even.

Hips

To check for even hip placement, feel for the tops of your child’s hip bones, or iliac crests. Draw a straight line from the top of one iliac crest to the other and confirm that the line is parallel to the floor.

Knees

Your child’s knees should be aligned over their ankles. To check, draw a line from the center of the knee, over the ankle, and through the heel. The line should be straight, and the knees should not touch. There shouldn’t be any bowing of the legs in either direction.

Feet

Check your child’s feet to confirm that they are naturally pointed forward. The toes should be pointed forward with no outward or inward pointing feet.
